“Leslie”, A 36 year-old patient from Mill Valley, CA says she has been treated with the “Treat and Prevent” technique at PowerMD for the past 14 months and no new lines or wrinkles have formed. “It’s like the clock has stopped ticking on my face,” she says.
How Does BOTOX Work?
Facial expressions such as smiling, frowning and laughing lead to wrinkles around the eyes, between the eyebrows and across the forehead. The more the muscles of the face are used to tighten in order to make and hold these expressions, the more obvious the creases. With age, the skin also becomes less elastic, accelerating the appearance of wrinkles.
BOTOX is injected into strategic areas of the face in order to prevent these muscles from contracting as
much. Patients are able to smile, laugh and even frown. But with less muscle contraction, the appearance of existing creases diminishes, and new wrinkles can be prevented from forming. When used at regular intervals determined by each patient’s needs BOTOX injections offer a viable option for helping to maintain ones’ youthful appearance. “How well BOTOX works to prevent creases from deepening and wrinkles developing depends heavily on enlisting the help of the right provider using the correct strategy” says Dr. Power.
What Does The Research Say?
It’s not only the doctors who offer these treatments who have seen positive outcomes when using BOTOX in young patients. Research has also been done to determine if regular use of these injections is effective in preventing wrinkles from forming, and the results agree that it works.
It is “rarely too early” to use BOTOX and other similar treatments to give skin a smoother, more youthful look, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).This study found that when the movement of facial muscles was minimized through BOTOX treatments, a dramatic reduction in fine lines and wrinkles can be seen more than a decade later. In fact, according to the study, regular treatment of people in their 20s and 30s should offer a “dramatic effect” on the appearance 20 years later.
Another study (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17116793) followed identical twins for 13 years, while one underwent regular preventative BOTOX treatment and the other did not. This study, published in 2006 in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, found that the untreated twin had deep creases in the forehead as well as lines between the eyebrows. The twin who had undergone regular BOTOX treatment showed little evidence of these wrinkles.
“Relying on BOTOX to stop the clock on developing lines and wrinkles has become the go-to cosmetic procedure for many people hoping to maintain a youthful look,” says Dr. Power. “With promising results from regular use, BOTOX is now being used effectively in our ‘Treat and Prevent” technique to also prevent facial lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place.”
